| GEORGIA BROWNE,
a small-seeded
peanut variety, was released in 1993 by the Georgia
Agricultural Experiment Stations. It was developed at the
University of Georgias Coastal Plain Experiment
Station and is intended for the same confectionery or
candy market as other Spanish-types. However, Georgia
Browne is an excellent choice for the roasted or peanut
butter trade as well. It has pod and seed size similar to
other Spanish market types. In comparison to Florunner, |
Georgia Browne
has significantly fewer ELK but a similar percentage of
medium and a significant-
ly higher percentage of mature No. 1 seeds. Georgia
Browne has shown a significant yield, grade, and dollar
value advantage over all leading Spanish varieties during
a ten year study in Georgia from 1993-2002. It has
multiple resistance to white mold, rhizoctonia limb rot,
and tomato spotted wilt virus. Georgia Browne also has a
slightly higher oleic to linoleic fatty acid ratio and a
longer shelf-life than Florunner. |
Georgia
Browne was developed by Dr. William D. Branch
at the University of Georgias Coastal Plain
Experiment Station in Tifton GA. It is a protected peanut
variety that can only be sold as a class of certified
seed and only by individuals licensed by the Georgia Seed
Development Commission (GSDC) under guidelines
established in conjunction with the University of Georgia
Research Foundation (UGARF). |
